On Thurs. May 23 at 7 p.m., join us at the University Club at Queen’s (168 Stuart St.) as we welcome Dr. David Detomasi of Smith School of Business, Queen’s University. Dr. Detomasi will be speaking about Profits and Power, Canada’s way forward in Geopolitics. RSVP today!

Dr. Detomasi is an Adjunct Associate Professor & Distinguished Teaching Fellow of International Business. He completed his PhD from the Department of Political Studies at Queen's University in 1999, specializing in international political economy. He also holds a Master of Arts in War Studies from the Royal Military College of Canada, a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from Queen's University, and is a graduate of the Executive Program on the Global Financial System from the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.

Dr. Detomasi's research interests include globalization, geopolitics, and corporate and non-profit governance. His book, Profits, Power and Petroleum: Navigating the Economics, Politics, and Geopolitics of Oil, was published by the University of Toronto Press in 2022.

He teaches courses on strategy, governance, and the geopolitics of global competition in undergraduate, MBA, and executive education programs at the Smith School of Business and has taught programs in Canada, Europe, and the United Arab Emirates. He has served as Academic Director for Global Business, Queen’s Executive Development Centre. He as has also served for a five-year term as academic director for the Fundamentals of Governance Program, Queen’s Executive Development Centre, and has served as Vice-Chair of the Queen’s University Senate. Dr. Detomasi resides in Kingston, is married, and has three children.

Cantabile Choirs of Kingston is honored to perform Considering Matthew Shepard by acclaimed composer Craig Hella Johnson. This powerful and poignant oratorio will be performed at The Spire, 82 Sydenham St, Kingston, Ontario, on May 25th at 7:30pm. 

Considering Matthew Shepard, a large-scale work for soloists, chorus, and instrumental ensemble, is a dramatic work centered around the tragic death of Matthew Shepard, a young gay man whose murder in 1998 became a pivotal moment in American discourse on hate crimes and LGBTQ+ rights.  

Premiered in 2016, Considering Matthew Shepard has rapidly captivated the global choral community due to its powerful musical narrative, innovative structure, and universal themes of love, loss, and human dignity. In Canada, as in many other parts of the world, the work has resonated deeply, prompting numerous performances across the country. 

Considering Matthew Shepard is not your typical choral experience. The piece includes narration, projection and sound design, and a wide variety of musical styles that represent a celebration of diversity: everything from classical, musical theatre and pop, to country, blues, gospel.

Almost Home is a charitable organization, operating in Kingston since 1992, that provides a place of comfort and respite for families whose children are receiving medical treatment in the Kingston area hospitals. We are hosting a Gala with the theme of "Under the Sea" at Our Lady of Fatima Parish on Thursday, May 30th starting at 5 pm. A sit-down dinner with a choice of 3 main entrees, a signature cocktail from The Frontenac Club and a featured dessert from Bread and Buttery Bakery. There will be a live and silent auction with all funds raised being directed to support Almost Home.

 ALAN CROSS (best known for The Ongoing History of New Music radio doc) brings his "Music Salon" to the Broom Factory  on June 1st, 2024. This event is co-presented by the Kingston Music Office. 

We have an urgent need for host families to accommodate university students from Japan. Since 1995, we’ve helped tens of thousands of international students find homes away from home with local families in Canada including right here in Kingston.  

When we welcome international students into our schools, our education programs benefit, our community benefits, and local students are offered life-changing experiences that positively shape their worldviews. 

Hosts across our network agree that homestay has changed their lives through life-long friendships and lasting connections throughout the world. They enjoy sharing what our province and city have to offer, including our values and unique way of life.  

As members of CHN, hosts get 24/7 emergency support, social and cultural integration training, and an allowance to help offset expenses.  

Hosts provide the same support, guidance, and attention you would want for your loved ones travelling overseas, including a welcoming, caring, patient, and safe home environment. Additionally, hosts provide their students: 
 

• Three nutritious meals per day
